Make safety a priority when transporting, handling and storing propane during camping and backyard barbecue season this summer, says Prince Edward Island Fire Marshal David Blacquiere.

“Before transporting an empty or full propane tank, make sure the valve is closed tightly,” said Mr. Blacquiere. “Even an empty tank can contain enough propane to cause a problem, especially in an enclosed automobile.”

The Fire Marshal offered additional tips for handling and transporting propane cylinders safely:

• Always ensure your propane tank is filled by a trained, certified propane professional.

• Propane tanks should be used, transported and stored in an upright position.

• If traveling by car, place the propane tank on the floor in the back seat or the trunk in an upright position to transport. If traveling by truck, placing the propane cylinder in a sturdy box or heavy plastic crate will help keep it upright. Pack old towels or blankets around the tank so it can’t tip over.

• When you arrive at your destination, take the tank out right away. Heat builds up quickly in a vehicle and can cause an explosion.

• Make sure your propane cylinder is up to date and in good condition. Leave the repairs to a qualified technician.

• Do not smoke while handling a propane tank.

• Always barbecue outside in a well-ventilated area, any time of year. Don’t store or use a propane cylinder in your home or any other enclosed space, such as a garage, basement or shed.

• Contact your propane provider for more safety tips and information on the safe transportation of propane cylinders.
