Public Safety officials throughout the province are to be commended for their work during the recent visit to Prince Edward Island by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, says Justice and Public Safety Minister Doug W. Currie.

“Public safety officials from agencies including the RCMP, municipal police services, and municipal fire departments worked around the clock to ensure that events ran safely, and that the provision of emergency services would be immediately available if needed,” said Mr. Currie.

In advance of a planned major event, provincial staff of The Office of Public Safety often participates in emergency planning with partners from organizations that are involved in the event, or agencies that would respond should an emergency situation develop. Throughout the 23 hours that the Royal couple was visiting the province, the Joint Emergency Operations Centre was activated to enable personnel to continually monitor the events and be aware at all times of precautions to ensure the safety of the Royal couple, Islanders and visitors.

Personnel working from the emergency operations centre included representatives from RCMP “L” Division, Charlottetown Fire Department, Canadian Red Cross, Department of National Defense, Environment Canada, Parks Canada and the government of Prince Edward Island, including the Office of Public Safety. Officials from the Fire Marshal’s Office served as safety officers and coordinated with the North Shore Fire Department throughout the Dalvay activities. They also worked with the Charlottetown and Summerside fire departments during the arrival of the Duke and Duchess in Charlottetown and their departure from Slemon Park.

“Prevention, mitigation and preparedness are very important components when planning for a large-scale event such as a Royal visit,” said Mr. Currie. “I commend the many partners in public safety who worked together behind the scenes during this visit, and who work together every day to ensure a safer province for us all.”
