Teachers return to class for Summer Institute

Education and Early Childhood Development

Teachers from across Prince Edward Island are going back to school for a two-day seminar to explore ways to help students with nonfiction writing and independent reading, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie.

“We are pleased to welcome Australian educator and author Tony Stead to Prince Edward Island to facilitate this unique professional development opportunity,” said Minister Currie. “Investing in our teachers is essential to strengthening our education system. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is committed to providing the tools to help students succeed in a competitive 21st century learning environment.”

The theme for the 2011 Summer Institute is “Good Choice! Supporting Independent Reading, Responding and Writing.” The two-day workshop is presented by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. It is specifically designed for Kindergarten to Grade 6 classroom teachers, resource teachers, administrators, staff developers, pre-service teachers and other literacy educators.

Facilitator Tony Stead has extensive teaching experience at the elementary and post-secondary level and is the author of several publications related to teaching strategies around reading and nonfiction writing. He works in literacy education with school districts across the United States, Canada and Australia. He is the lead author of Prince Edward Island’s new grades K-6 Language Arts books and materials.”

Literacy is the key to enabling students to effectively access and use information in today's globalized world,” said Sheila Barnes, Elementary Education Coordinator with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. “The 2011 Summer Institute gives teachers an opportunity to learn from a world-renowned educator and author.”

The 2011 Summer Institute is scheduled for July 25 and 26 at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel in Charlottetown.

Backgrounder/ Biography

Tony Stead is an Australian educator who has taught in elementary schools and lectured at the University of Melbourne. He is the past president of the Melbourne Chapter of the Australian Reading Association and the author of many publications. His latest includes Good Choice! Supporting Independent Reading and Response K-6 and the video series Time For Nonfiction which highlights his recent work with several teachers.

Tony has been a keynote and featured speaker at hundreds of conferences including Prince Edward Island in 2008. He currently works extensively in literacy education with school districts across the United States, Canada and Australia. His greatest love is learning from children.
