PEI Energy minister in Halifax to meet with Maritime ministers and industry representatives

Environment, Energy & Forestry

Environment, Energy and Forestry Minister Richard Brown is meeting Maritime energy ministers and members of the energy industry at a conference this week in Halifax.

“The need for a regional approach to energy issues in Atlantic Canada is essential,” said Minister Brown. “There is great potential for growth in this industry and by working together we can strengthen the energy sector, create more jobs and lower energy costs in the region.”

The Minister said regional co-operation is an important factor in Prince Edward Island decreasing its reliance on power generated by fossil fuels and increasing its ability to utilize more wind power for domestic consumption.

The energy ministers will present an overview of the energy sector in their provinces and participate in a town hall discussion.

The Core All Energy Conference agenda also includes an update on the proposed Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project in Newfoundland and Labrador. Minister Brown said he will be promoting the need for a regional transmission cable to ensure all Atlantic Canadians have access to clean, renewable power.

“I look forward to continuing the discussions with my colleagues on how to maximize the opportunities that exist in the energy industry for Atlantic Canada,” said Brown.
