Grade four classrooms across Prince Edward Island are receiving new sets of dictionaries through a charitable donation by Bell Aliant Pioneer Volunteers program, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac.

“This is a tremendous donation from a local community group to provide this resource for our Grade 4 classrooms,” said Minister McIsaac. “The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is pleased that the Bell Aliant Pioneer Volunteers have chosen a charitable opportunity that helps improve literacy skills and enhance student achievement.”

Every fourth grade classroom in the Western School Board and the Eastern School District now has access to a set of its own dictionaries to provide to each student.

In celebration of the Pioneers’ 100 years of service, volunteerism and philanthropy, the Pioneers Volunteer Community Grants Program is providing more than $520,000 in grant funds to give back and make a difference in 21 communities across North America. The grants range in size from $10,000 to $50,000 in communities spanning North America from Texas to Prince Edward Island.

“We take pride in helping the youth of today become the leaders of tomorrow,” said Joe Rowledge, president of Acadia Chapter Pioneers. “Our gift to the students across Prince Edward Island shows how we can make tangible change through team work. It is so encouraging to be involved with this Centennial project as the Pioneers celebrate 100 years as a volunteer organization with such strong commitment to their communities.”
