The results of the 2011 provincial literacy assessments are available online and there have been exceptional gains in results, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac.

“Similar to last year, the 2011 results in reading comprehension and writing at the Grade 3 level show that the investment in intervention programs in the early years such as literacy coaches, early literacy and math intervention programs, new curriculum and resources, and professional development for Grade 1 to 3 teachers is paying off,” said Minister McIsaac. “Since 2007, students in Grade 3 have gone from meeting the grade level expectation in reading from 62 per cent to 85 per cent in 2011. As well, we have seen a decrease in students experiencing difficulty in 2007 from 27 per cent to 10 per cent in 2011.”

Provincial assessment results are one way to monitor how well students are doing in reading and writing at the end of the primary, elementary and intermediate grades. These assessments were conducted in May 2011.

Prince Edward Island students also participate in provincial, national and international assessments that help measure individual and overall student achievement and the overall performance of the provincial education system.

“The Common Assessment Program has been able to show us where the gaps are in our school system in terms of curriculum, resources and professional development,” said Minister McIsaac. “I look forward to continuing to collaborate with our educational partners to discuss where students may need help, and how resources may be directed to further improve our education system.”

Parents are encouraged to talk to their child’s teacher about the full scope of their child’s performance.

Minister McIsaac congratulates the students, teachers and principals on the continuous improvement in academic performance since 2007.
