Charlottetown's National Child Day parade had one of its largest turnouts ever with approximately 500 children and early childhood educators, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIssac.

“I would like to congratulate the Early Childhood Development Association of Prince Edward Island for organizing the National Child Day parade and applaud it for bringing together so many people,” said Minister McIsaac. “It is incredible to see all the children and partners in early childhood being recognized on this very important day. Early childhood educators play an invaluable role in educating and preparing Island children for the future.”

Today, Minister McIsaac led the annual National Child Day parade throughout downtown Charlottetown. Children from communities across the province marched through the streets to celebrate National Child Day.

November 20, 2011 marks the 18th annual National Child Day in Canada. National Child Day commemorates the United Nations' adoption of two documents that focus on the rights of children. These documents make a commitment to ensure that all children are treated with dignity and respect.

“I encourage all Islanders to take the time to celebrate National Child Day,” said Minister McIsaac. “Not only celebrate the children but those in the community who play an important role of raising, educating and caring for the children of today to be the global citizens of tomorrow.”

In addition, this year the Early Childhood Development Association is collecting donations during the parade for its Christmas Stocking gift giving program. This gift giving program recognizes disadvantaged teens, adults and seniors at Christmas as an opportunity to support the whole family. It will continue to collect donations at its office at 3 Brighton Road, until December 10, 2011.

The parade is an annual event organized by the Early Childhood Development Association of Prince Edward Island; the parade begins at the Charlottetown Fire Station, continues up Kent Street to University Avenue, and then ends at Memorial Hall for a gathering.
