Contractor Licensing Program streamlines permit process

Environment, Labour and Justice

Contractors who work in watercourses, wetlands or buffer zones can participate in a licensing program to streamline the regular permitting process, says Environment, Labour and Justice Minister Janice Sherry.

“This is an optional program that trains contractors to do high-quality work in environmentally sensitive areas,” said Minister Sherry. “It improves efficiency by enabling government to enforce environmental standards in watercourses and wetlands while removing some of the administrative red tape for contractors.”

Licensed contractors are no longer required to apply for a permit for each project. They are able to carry out certain kinds of work without direct supervision from the department and are responsible for maintaining project quality and meeting environmental regulations. The department continues to carry out routine inspections on completed work to ensure compliance with the Environmental Protection Act.

New contractors wishing to participate in the licensing program must complete the training in order to be eligible. Existing contractors must update their training in order to continue their participation in the program.

Participation in the program is optional. Unlicensed contractors are still able to apply for Watercourse, Wetland and Buffer Zone Activity Permits through the regular permitting process.

The training session will be held February 14, 2012, 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m. at the Dutch Inn in Cornwall. Storm date is February 15. The deadline for registration is February 7. Registrations will be accepted by telephone 368-5052, fax 368-5830, or email dethompson@gov.pe.ca.
