Ministers Shea and MacKinley announce funding for the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club

Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for ACOA and La Francophonie, as well as the Honourable Ron MacKinley, PEI Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, today announced funding from the federal and provincial governments for upgrades to the boat marina at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.

“Our Government understands the significant role establishments like the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club play in strengthening the local economy,” said Minister Shea. “These venues are key economic drivers for communities in our region because they support local tourism, job creation, growth and long-term prosperity, which are priorities in our Economic Action Plan.”

The Government of Canada, through ACOA, has invested $51,975 to help with the expansion and upgrades to the boat marina. The Government of Prince Edward Island, through the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development and the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning, has invested an additional $190,875. This financial assistance will allow the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club to expand the existing boat marina to include 34 new docks to accommodate additional boating visitors to the area. The upgrades will also include replacing the electrical units, upgrades to the exterior of the building and the installation of a new high-velocity diesel pump.

“The Government of Prince Edward Island is pleased to contribute funding from the Island Community Fund and Skills PEI to upgrade the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club,” said Minister MacKinley. “This investment reflects our commitment to strengthening the local economy by improving marina services offered to tourists, and by creating jobs to help Islanders gain valuable job experience.”

The installation of the new high-velocity diesel pump will help to better accommodate large luxury vessels, the Coast Guard emergency response vessels and provide marine fuel for the Summerside area.

“The upgrades to the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club will help our complex continue to grow and better support the boating community here in Summerside and the surrounding areas,” said Mr. Brent Drummond, Chairman, Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club. “We would like to thank both levels of government for their contribution to this project, as without it we may not have been able to make it a reality.”
