Islanders encouraged to participate in the new English Language School Board

Education and Early Childhood Development

Individuals interested in serving as a trustee on the new English Language School Board are encouraged to submit their applications for consideration, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac.

“This is a significant step in the transition to the new single English Language School Board,” said Minister McIsaac. “We are pleased to see the process moving forward and we are looking forward to having the new board of trustees in place.”

Effective governance depends on the right mixture of knowledge, skills, personal qualities and diversity. Government will appoint a board chair and 10 school board trustees from across the province. The board should reflect the diversity of the communities served, including demographic, cultural, economic, geographic, gender, ethnic and social characteristics.

“It is essential that the single English School Board includes a variety of people with a wide range of experience and knowledge in various areas and, above all, a keen interest in education for all students in Prince Edward Island,” said Minister McIsaac.

Knowledge or experience in areas such as education, health, law, business, public policy and financial management would be considered a valuable asset.

Last month, the name for the new school board, superintendent and management team were announced. Two interim trustees were also appointed to support a smooth transition. Patsy MacLean from the Eastern School District and Gary Doucette from the Western School Board will continue the work of the school board trustees until the new board takes office on January 2, 2013.
