Lobster value good news for province

Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development

The landed value of the Prince Edward Island spring lobster harvest has risen from $67 million in 2011 to over $101 million in 2012 which is good news for the industry and the Island economy, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“I am very pleased with reports indicating that the quality of the catch is excellent. This can be attributed to the quality fishing grounds surrounding Prince Edward Island,” said Minister MacKinley.

The fishery is a vital contributor to the Island economy, he said.

“Fishing is one of the three main industries on Prince Edward Island and it provides jobs for upwards of 6,000 Islanders,” said the Minister. “When the fishing industry is strong, many other sectors of the Island economy benefit, such as auto dealerships and small business operators.

“I would like to recognize the hard work of fishers, processors and their workers, and the department staff who all contributed to a successful spring season.”

The province is continuing its marketing and promotional efforts for Prince Edward Island lobster in China, India, Japan, Europe and the United States, he said.
