Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley met with his federal colleague, Fisheries and Oceans Minister Keith Ashfield, in Mill River yesterday to discuss a number of issues of concern to Prince Edward Island fishers.

“Minister Ashfield and I had good discussions yesterday about a number of fisheries issues important here on Prince Edward Island,” said the Minister. “We discussed the negative impact changes to the EI system will have on fishers, we discussed the 40 % reduction in halibut quota and we talked about DFO’s decision to no longer administer trap tags.”

Minister MacKinley said he was pleased MP Gail Shea was able to attend the meeting as well.

“It’s important that we work together to provide good management for the fishery to ensure the future viability of this important Island industry,” he said.

Minister MacKinley said he raised other issues with the federal minister including the potential to expand the tuna charter boat fishery, DFO changes to habitat personnel and the management of aquaculture leasing and licensing on Prince Edward Island.
