Prince Edward Island seafood is being promoted to Alberta chefs and restaurant owners to boost seafood markets in the west, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“We are taking Prince Edward Island seafood to Alberta chefs and restaurant owners to show them the high quality and great value of our seafood,” said the Minister. “This is a good opportunity to connect with buyers and chefs and hear what they are saying about our products.”

Ted Grant, a chef from the Culinary Institute, will prepare samples of Prince Edward Island lobsters, oysters, mussels and clams for chefs, restaurant owners and food buyers at promotional events in Calgary and Edmonton. Minister MacKinley will also be promoting Prince Edward Island oysters at the Rocky Mountain Oyster Festival in Calgary.

“Not only will Prince Edward Island oysters be featured at this festival, our department is promoting a draw that includes a free trip to Prince Edward Island to attend PEI’s International Shellfish Festival,” he said.

The Minister said gaining an understanding how seafood is sold in Calgary and Edmonton will help identify ways to help Prince Edward Island seafood companies to market their products in the region.

“Expanding markets for our seafood products will help broaden our market base and should help provide higher returns to both the harvesting and processing sectors in Prince Edward Island,” he said.

Almost two million people, including many Atlantic Canadians, live in Calgary and Edmonton.
