Residents of Morell will benefit from a provincial investment to improve recreational facilities in their community, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“Through the Island Community Fund, we are working in partnership with local groups to improve facilities and services available to people living in rural communities,” said the Minister. “This funding will increase recreational opportunities available in the community and will help improve the quality of life for residents.”

The provincial government is partnering with the Village of Morell and the Morell and Area Development Corporation to invest in three projects.

An Island Community Fund contribution of $13,546 will help fund the installation of new playground equipment at Morell Consolidated School to improve safety and accessibility. The new equipment will cost $54,186.

A contribution of $7,425 from the Island Community Fund will also fund the cost of installing a multi-use sports court in the community. The new court will be used for sports activities including basketball, volleyball and ball hockey. The total cost of the project is $18,562.

The Morell Ball Field will be upgraded with improved lighting and better dugouts. It is the only ball field in Kings County with lights. Last year it suffered major damage from wind storms. The Island Community Fund is providing $7,920 towards the total cost of $11,880.

“These investments reflect the commitment of the provincial government to meet the needs of Island communities and their residents,” said the Minister. “I would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of the community volunteers who helped make these projects happen.”

The Island Community Fund is focused on addressing infrastructure needs in communities across the province.
