Upcoming BioFoodTech workshop on E. coli

Innovation PEI

BioFoodTech will a hold a workshop on the control of E. coli O157:H7 and related pathogenic strains in meat processing plants on Tuesday, January 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its facility in Charlottetown.

The purpose of the workshop is to help small and large meat processing plants and abattoirs establish and implement effective programs to reduce and prevent E. coli O157:H7 and related pathogenic strains from contaminating their products. The instructors are Ebo Budu-Amoako, Senior Microbiologist at BioFoodTech, and Jim Landrigan, Technical Advisor, who have together developed and delivered national training programs on food processing safety.

“The presence of E. coli O157:H7 in processed beef products can result in illness to consumers as well as product recall, as we have seen recently across the country,” said Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning Allen Roach. “This workshop will provide a practical foundation for participants to strengthen preventive measures within the industry.”

This is the first of four of these workshops scheduled in the Atlantic Provinces. Others will be held in Moncton, February 5; Halifax, February 18; and St. John’s, March 19.

In addition to providing food safety and product handling courses, BioFoodTech provides sampling and analytical services to the Island’s food processing industry.
