Funding announced today will provide financial support for the 2014 celebrations and will assist in major renovations at the Confederation Centre, says Premier Robert Ghiz.

“The 2014 celebrations are a once in a lifetime opportunity for Islanders to celebrate their shared history and to showcase Prince Edward Island to potential visitors from all over the world,” said Premier Ghiz. “As such, it is important that the province make appropriate investments to help ensure the event’s success. Today we are announcing $6,600,000 in additional funding for 2014 which brings the province’s total commitment to $8,780,000 so far, with further funding to be announced at a later date.”

The funding supports the $5,000,000 PEI 2014 Fund which provides Islanders with the opportunity to shape the celebrations by submitting proposals for 2014-themed events, activities and legacy projects, as well as funding for planning, marketing and promotional activities being carried out by PEI 2014 Inc.

“With this generous support from the Government of Prince Edward Island, PEI 2014 Inc. is laying the groundwork for a spectacular 150th anniversary year and inviting all Canadians to join us here as we celebrate the creation of our nation,” said PEI 2014 Inc. board member and Community Advisory Chair, John Horrelt.

Also announced today was the province’s share of funding for major renovations to the Homburg Theatre at Confederation Centre. The province’s financial commitment for that project is $2,800,000.

“These much-needed renovations will modernize a facility that has not seen major renovations since it was built almost 50 years ago,” said Premier Ghiz. “The Confederation Centre will be an extremely important partner in the 2014 celebrations, so this work could not have been better timed.”

“This funding for capital improvements to the Homburg Theatre ensures that Confederation Centre of the Arts will remain at the forefront as one of the nation’s premium performance houses,” says Wayne Hambly, Chair of the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust. “We thank our federal and provincial government partners for their significant investments. We look forward to continuing to ignite the imagination of all Canadians for years to come by presenting the very best in the visual and performing arts.”
