If the number of applications received for the PEI 2014 Fund is any indication, then Islanders are very excited and enthusiastic for the upcoming 2014 celebrations, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson.

“Officials with PEI 2014 Inc. report that 550 applications worth close to $28 million were received from Islanders and local organizations for the $5 million PEI 2014 Fund,” said Minister Henderson. “I think that speaks volumes about the level of interest and enthusiasm being shown by Islanders around the 2014 celebrations. It shows Islanders want to play a role in this historic event.”

Premier Robert Ghiz announced the PEI 2014 Fund in September of last year. Projects are funded on a cost-shared basis and must be implemented between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2014. The PEI 2014 Fund provides three levels of funding: small grants up to $2,014, midsize grants from $2,015 to $25,000 and large grants from $25,001 to $250,000. The final deadline for applications was March 15, 2013.

The volunteer PEI 2014 Community Advisory Committee is in the process of reviewing and scoring the applications received for the fund based on a number of criteria. That committee represents a broad spectrum of Islanders including youth, members of the Acadian, aboriginal and multicultural communities, as well as experts in tourism, arts and culture, heritage, education, sports and business. That committee will make recommendations to the PEI 2014 Board of Directors as to which projects should be approved for funding. Announcements of approved projects will begin in late May or early June.

“We are absolutely delighted that a variety of creative and exciting projects from every part of the province were put forward for funding,” said John Horrelt, Chair of the PEI 2014 Community Advisory Committee. “It was a big job to review 550 applications, but Committee members are satisfied that the adjudication process was both thorough and fair.”

The 2014 celebrations promise to be a once in a generation opportunity for Islanders to celebrate their shared heritage and to showcase all the province has to offer to potential visitors. For more information on the 2014 celebrations visit www.pei2014.ca .
