Province finalizes deal to protect Buffaloland Provincial Park

Tourism and Culture

An agreement between the Province of Prince Edward Island and the Moonlight International Foundation will see Buffaloland Provincial Park remain open to the public free of charge, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson.

“Once this process began we heard from a number of individuals who were adamant that any change to the use of the park or to the herd was unacceptable,” said Minister Henderson. “The deal we reached with the Foundation addresses all the concerns presented to us by residents. It ensures that the use of the land will not change and the herd will remain where it is. It keeps the park open to the public and free of charge. And it ensures the herd will be cared for under a herd health management plan administered by a local veterinarian. If any of these covenants are broken, the property and herd will revert back to the province.”

In the 2012 budget, the province announced that it would issue an RFP for the lease, sale or management of Buffaloland Provincial Park. No proposals were submitted under the RFP. The Moonlight Foundation then came forward with a proposal to take over the park and the herd. Negotiations wrapped up last week and the province approved the deal which will see the property conveyed to the Foundation.

“This is great news for the province and for the people of southern Kings County,” said Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning and MLA for Montague-Kilmuir Allen Roach. “People in my district were very concerned that the park would close, or that the buffalo would be moved. This deal ensures they stay where they are and satisfies every concern I heard over the last few months. I think the Moonlight Foundation will be an excellent steward of the herd.”

“The Moonlight Foundation understands the significance of the park to the local community,” said Foundation spokesperson Max Wang. “Over the years, the park has become well known as one of the Island’s landmarks and attractions. By keeping the park open, Islanders and visitors can continue to enjoy it, and the buffalo can live a well-protected and healthy life.”

A public information session will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre on Route 4, Wood Islands Road in Montague. All are welcome to attend.
