“Scales Pond is an important part of the community as it supports the agriculture, tourism and aquaculture sectors in the region,” said Minister Shea. “Our Government, through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, is pleased to support projects like this one which help to maintain a high quality of life for residents and visitors in our rural communities.”
The Government of Canada is investing $200,000 from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The Government of Prince Edward Island is investing $200,000 from the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development.
“We are very pleased to support this project and I would especially like to recognize the fundraising efforts of the Dunk River Enhancement Committee who are contributing one-third of the costs through donations from individuals and local businesses,” said Minister MacKinley.
This project will support the reconstruction of a water control system to reinstate Scales Pond in the community. This funding will support the development of eco-tourism opportunities such as recreational fishing, canoeing, and hiking for both residents and visitors.
“We are very excited to be receiving this funding from both levels of government,” said Mr. Dennis Hopping, Chairperson, Dunk River Enhancement Committee. “With these investments, we are now going to be able to bring Scales Pond back to what it was and allow this community to enjoy everything it offers once again.”
In the Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced plans to further modernize Canada’s infrastructure by committing $150 million over two years for the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency is delivering the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund in Atlantic Canada with an allocation of $16.6 million over two years, of which $2.5 million will be invested in Prince Edward Island.
The Government of Prince Edward Island is delivering funds to eligible projects through the Island Community Fund, a multi-year funding commitment to address infrastructure needs in communities across the province.
