Juno Award-Winner Johnny Reid to Headline Indoor Event

Prince Edward Island will be ringing in 2014 in a big way. The PEI 2014 New Year’s Eve Opening Celebrations will include both a free, family-friendly outdoor event and an indoor, ticketed concert headlined by multi-platinum-selling artist, Johnny Reid.

“We invite all Islanders and visitors to participate in the PEI 2014 New Year’s Eve Opening Celebrations,” says Minister of Tourism and Culture, Robert Henderson. “It will be a great evening for people of all ages and an opportunity to come together to ring in the New Year and kick off an unprecedented celebratory year in Prince Edward Island.”

During the free outdoor event, Islanders and visitors will be treated to a variety of entertainment. Province House will provide a stunning backdrop for a sing-along, feel-good concert featuring the rousing music of ECMA Award winners Rawlins Cross and PEI’s own Meaghan Blanchard. Historic Great George Street will be specially decorated to create a magical atmosphere for the celebrations that will also include buskers, ice sculptors, sleigh rides, hot dogs and apple cider, and a children’s play zone and warm-up area at Murphy’s Community Centre. The evening will be capped off by a spectacular fireworks display.

“It goes without saying that Charlottetown feels privileged to be recognized as the Birthplace of Confederation," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "The City of Charlottetown is pleased that the official launch of the 2014 year-long celebrations will take place on the very street traveled by the Fathers of Confederation 150 years ago. We are happy to be a partner of what promises to be a momentous New Year's Eve celebration."

The indoor event will be held at the Prince Edward Island Convention Centre and in addition to Reid, will feature PEI’s own Lennie Gallant, and Island dance band More Soul. Tickets for the indoor event priced at $59.99 will go on sale at 10 a.m. October 5th and can be purchased by visiting pei2014.ca/nye, calling Ticketpro at 1-888-311-9090 or by visiting any Ticketpro location in Atlantic Canada.

“We’re very excited to unveil the program for the PEI 2014 New Year’s Eve Opening Ceremonies,” says PEI 2014 Executive Director, Penny Walsh McGuire. “In keeping with the year-long PEI 2014 calendar of events, the opening celebrations really have something for everyone. From children’s activities and fireworks to multi-platinum-selling artists, this is going to a spectacular evening that PEI won’t soon forget . We expect the indoor ticketed event featuring Johnny Reid to sell out quickly, so people shouldn’t delay in purchasing tickets.”

The City of Summerside will play host to the PEI 2014 New Year’s Eve Finale Celebration on December 31st, 2014. Further details on the closing celebrations will be released at a later date.

In 2014, Canadians will mark the 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which paved the way to Confederation. PEI 2014 Inc. is facilitating the planning, promotion and implementation of the Sesquicentennial celebrations. The PEI 2014 celebrations are made possible through generous support from the Government of Prince Edward Island and the Government of Canada. The year-long and province-wide PEI 2014 program of events will honour the past, celebrate the present and plan a bold tomorrow.
