511 road conditions service now has construction updates

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal

The province’s 511 traveler-information service now offers up-to-date information on road construction, Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey said.

“511 proved popular last winter when it began providing travelers with information on current road conditions by phone, mobile device or web,” Minister Vessey said. “Now that it includes alerts on construction-related delays, closures and detours, 511 is the only source of information needed to plan the safest, most efficient trip possible.”

Launched in January, the service is available free in Prince Edward Island simply by dialing 5-1-1 – similar to calling 9-1-1 for emergencies, 4-1-1 for directory assistance, or 8-1-1 for health information. The telephone service responds to voice commands and input from a touch-tone telephone and offers construction updates on the Island’s main roads.

Computer and mobile-device users can visit 511.gov.pe.ca, which features an interactive map of the province. Users can modify the map to display incidents and activities, weather, ferry crossings, parks, and the province’s six weather webcams at Elmsdale, Albany, Blue Shank Road, St. Peter’s, Bonshaw (returning soon) and Poole’s Corner.

The Highway Maintenance Division values suggestions from the public on where roads may need improvement. To report a highway problem or maintenance issue, contact your county dispatch office.
