The very location where the Fathers of Confederation came ashore in 1864 will be buzzing with the spirit of celebration throughout the summer of 2014. The PEI 2014 Celebration Zone will come alive at Confederation Landing Park on the Charlottetown waterfront on July 1 and offer free programming and activities daily through to September 7.

“Canada has a remarkable story of history and heritage,” said the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). “As a Government and as citizens, we have a duty to share and celebrate these stories. I am pleased that our Government, through ACOA’s Business Development Program is investing $495,000 in PEI 2014 Inc. to create a Celebration Zone which will serve as the cornerstone of programming for the 150th Anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference.”

The PEI 2014 Celebration Zone will be a hub of activity celebrating the rich history and diverse culture of PEI and Canada.

“We are proud to welcome all Islanders, Canadians from across the country, and guests from around the world to celebrate with us in Prince Edward Island in 2014,” says Minister of Tourism and Culture, Robert Henderson. “I am very pleased PEI 2014 Inc will be contributing $1.4 million of its provincial funding to showcase Island culture and performers in the Celebration Zone throughout the peak tourism season.”

The PEI 2014 Celebration Zone will include arts & heritage exhibits, a lounge and culinary area, children’s play zone, buskers, cultural programming including music, theatre, dance as well as other family-friendly events and activities.

“The PEI 2014 Celebration Zone will fit wonderfully in Confederation Landing Park,” said Mayor Clifford Lee. “The park is the perfect backdrop for this not to be missed cultural celebration as it’s the very site where the Fathers arrived.”

PEI 2014 Inc. is also pleased to announce Atlantic Lottery / Red Shores as official presenting partner for the year-long PEI 2014 celebrations. Brent Scrimshaw, Atlantic Lottery President and CEO, and Michael MacKinnon, Red Shores Managing Director, participated in today’s exciting announcement.

“We will have the opportunity to celebrate with Islanders, with Canadians from all parts of the country and with visitors from around the globe as presenting partner of the PEI2014 Celebrations,” said Mr. Scrimshaw. “Our guests will experience the very best in Island hospitality, including at our own site, Red Shores, which will be dressed and decked for the celebrations.”

In 2014, Canadians will mark the 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which paved the way to Confederation. PEI 2014 Inc. is facilitating the planning, promotion and implementation of the Sesquicentennial celebrations. The PEI 2014 celebrations are made possible through generous support from the Government of Prince Edward Island and the Government of Canada. The year-long and province-wide PEI 2014 program of events will honour the past, celebrate the present and plan a bold tomorrow.
