Travelers have been using portions of it for more than a month, and now the entire Trans Canada Highway realignment is paved and open to traffic, Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey said.

“Islanders can finally drive the completed highway from New Haven to Bonshaw,” Minister Vessey said. “Although some final work still must be done, we are proud to have reached this milestone and done it on time, and on budget.”

The last 1.8 kilometre section opened this morning, October 31, between Encounter Creek and New Haven. The realignment is now approximately 95 per cent complete; work still remains to connect Colville Road to the realignment in New Haven, and a new lane must be paved just east of the Bonshaw Bridge.

Sections of the realigned highway were opened as they were completed in order to minimize disruption to commercial transport trucks and the travelling public. The first paved portion of the realignment opened to traffic September 23 between Churchill and Bonshaw.

The 6.1 kilometre Trans Canada Highway realignment increases safety by improving sight lines, eliminating sharp curves, removing potentially dangerous access points, reducing the overall grade of the highway, and adding turn lanes and improving intersections.
