A new video contest will give young people a chance to showcase workplace safety and worker rights, says Environment, Labour and Justice Minister Janice Sherry.

“The Young Worker Video Contest is being run by my department and the Workers Compensation Board in order to encourage young people to show their creativity while learning about their rights as workers,” said Minister Sherry. “It is part of our commitment to promote workplace safety and rights for workers in this province.”

Today, the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) launched the second annual It’s Your Job…Workplace, Rights, Camera, Action! youth video contest. An original video about the importance of workplace safety could win $1,000 for an Island high school student and another $1,000 for their school.

“The contest is a great opportunity to raise awareness about workplace safety among young people,” said Nancy Guptill, Workers Compensation Board Chair. “By using video as a platform, students are able to share important safety messages in compelling and creative ways.”

The It’s Your Job contest is part of a national initiative of labour ministers from across Canada, to promote workplace health and safety and rights for young workers. The Prince Edward Island contest is sponsored by the Department of Environment, Labour, and Justice in partnership with the Workers Compensation Board.

The contest is open November 1, 2013 until March 28, 2014 and the Island winner will go on to compete with students from across the country for national prizes. Full contest details are available on the Workers Compensation Board website at wcb.pe.ca/workplace/contest.
