A heavy-duty painting project helped some Island students flex their artistic muscles while learning safety around the province’s snowplows, Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey said.

“For the first time, we offered Island students the chance to paint murals on the wings of our plow trucks,” Minister Vessey said. “We have enjoyed seeing the effort and the creativity the students put into the murals, and they got to see up-close the equipment that we use to keep the roads in their communities safe during the winter.”

St. Louis Elementary, École Pierre-Chaisson, Montague Consolidated, Elm Street Elementary, and Souris Consolidated volunteered for the project. Each school was delivered a plow “wing” – which deflects the snow from the plow to the roadside – and students were told to paint whatever they wanted.

The painted wing was taken to the provincial body shop in Tignish for a clear protective coating, and the finished product returned to each school mounted on a plow truck so the student artists could inspect their work. While the trucks visited their schools, students got to experience their size and learn the importance of not playing near the road when trucks were working – and staying visible to the drivers.
