Province supports renovations to Summerside food bank and soup kitchen

“The Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development is pleased to support community based organizations that are helping Islanders,” said Minister MacKinley. “The expansion at the Salvation Army in Summerside will offer a modern space for volunteers to prepare and serve hot meals to those in need and provide additional space to operate a regional food bank.”
The province is investing $50,000 in the project which includes a newly expanded soup kitchen, large freezer, a modern dining hall and office space for Salvation Army family service staff. The total cost of the project is $900,000. Construction began in June, 2013, and is expected to be completed in January, 2014.
“I would like to say a big thank you to the people, businesses and volunteers that support the Salvation Army in Summerside,” said Major Willis Drover. “There are about 120 volunteers that support us and all of the food used in our soup kitchen is donated. Most of the items are provided by different companies in the area. The community is really helping out and all of our operations are supported by volunteers. Without these people, we could not do what we do. The service means so much for our low income clients from across Prince County.”
The Salvation Army is preparing to move into its newly expanded location on Pope Avenue in Summerside before Christmas. Volunteers and staff also operate a thrift store at a separate location in St. Eleanors on the Veterans Memorial Highway (All Weather Highway).
