Drivers from Taiwan can now obtain a Prince Edward Island driver’s licence at any Access PEI location without taking a written test or road exam, Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey says.

“Being able to drive is a critical part of adjusting to life in a new location,” Minister Vessey said. “Removing some of the barriers to driving in Prince Edward Island should help more of our international residents settle in to their adopted home.”

Taiwanese drivers still must take a vision test, pay the appropriate fees, and provide sufficient documentation. The licence they receive is a Class 5, which is good for operating passenger vehicles.

Full-time university or college students may still use their foreign driver’s licence but must also have an International Driver’s Permit if their home country’s licence is not in English or French.

Taiwan is one of 10 nations whose drivers licences are recognized by Prince Edward Island. The others are the United States, Austria, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, South Korea, Japan, and Switzerland. Drivers from elsewhere in Canada can also obtain a provincial driver’s licence without a written or road test.
