U.S. auditors give Island truck registration program high marks

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal

Auditors from the United States have given a glowing report to Prince Edward Island’s process for registering all Island commercial trucks traveling in Canada and the U.S., says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey.

“This program helps make it possible for Prince Edward Island trucking companies to continue delivering Island products to customers across North America,” Minister Vessey said. “Such an outstanding audit is evidence of a program that is operating as close to perfection as is possible, and the employees who administer it deserve our thanks.”

Prince Edward Island was found to be in complete compliance with the administrative rules of the International Registration Plan (IRP) by the plan’s three-member U.S. audit panel. This is the third consecutive time the province has received such a positive audit.

To remain a party to the international registration agreement – which includes the 10 Canadian provinces and 49 U.S. states – each state and province’s business practices must be reviewed by a panel of its peers every five years. The member provinces and states collect the registration fee paid by each of their trucking companies, then they distribute the fees to the other states and provinces though which the trucks travel.

In 2012, Prince Edward Island’s two-person IRP office – Cyndie Cunneyworth and Bonnie MacDonald – registered 686 vehicles for travel in the U.S. and Canada for 204 Island-based transport companies.
