Weekly website postings from the Public Archives and Records Office will give Islanders insight into life on Prince Edward Island in 1864 and will serve as a great way to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson.

“This Week in 1864 gives Islanders a great deal of insight into what the Island was like 150 years ago during the year of the Charlottetown Conference,” says Minister Henderson. “The weekly postings include newspaper clippings, diary entries and daybooks, so the information presented can be both very formal and very personal in nature. I think this is a great way for Islanders to learn about 1864 and about the efforts of the Public Archives to preserve the Island’s history and to honour the past.”

The weekly postings can be found at www.gov.pe.ca/archives. The province will also use social media like Twitter and Facebook to share each weekly posting with followers.

“This project goes hand in hand with our new 2014 Almanac as a way to help teach Islanders about our shared history, and to promote our efforts to preserve the Island’s past,” says Provincial Archivist Jill MacMicken-Wilson. “We’ve combed the archives and gathered a very interesting and eclectic collection of postings to share with Islanders over the coming weeks and months. I encourage everyone to visit the website for a glimpse of the Island in 1864.”
