The public is encouraged to nominate someone they know in the community or workplace who is making a difference to Prince Edward Island’s environment, says Environment, Labour and Justice Minister Janice Sherry.

“I am deeply impressed with the many ways in which Islanders are making a positive contribution to protecting and enhancing our environment,” said Minister Sherry. “It is important that those contributions be recognized and celebrated because all Islanders benefit from a healthy environment.”

May 1 is the nomination deadline for the Prince Edward Island Environmental Awards. The Environmental Advisory Council first began honouring Islanders for environmental leadership in 1987. Over the years, many people have received well-deserved recognition for their special contribution to protecting and enhancing the environment.

To be eligible for an award, nominees must have been instrumental in

• identifying, reducing, solving or avoiding an environmental problem;

• demonstrating consistently responsible environmental management practices; and/or

• promoting public awareness, understanding and active concern for the enhancement and protection of the environment.

Schools are eligible for the Environmental School Challenge Award which includes a prize of $1,500.

The Environmental Awards will be presented at a special ceremony in June.
