National Day of Honour for Canadian Troops in Afghanistan

Premier's Office

On May 9, 2014, the National Day of Honour, we commemorate the strength and dedication of the Canadian Armed Forces who joined the military mission in Afghanistan, said Premier Robert Ghiz.

“The National Day of Honour is a day for Canadians to recognize the contributions Canadian soldiers have made during this mission,” said Premier Ghiz. “It is a chance to thank those that fought, remember those that fell, and recognize the families and friends that supported them along the way.”

On May 9 at 2:30 p.m., a moment of silence will be held for Canadians to reflect on the sacrifices the Canadian troops have made during the mission in Afghanistan.

Several events will take place across Canada including a parade from the Canadian War Museum following the Memorial Route to Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The Afghanistan Memorial Vigil, constructed by Canadian troops in Kandahar, will be on display in the Hall of Honour on Parliament Hill during the parade.

“Today and every day we thank our Canadian Soldiers for all they do,” said Premier Ghiz. “I encourage all Islanders to take this day to remember those who sacrifice everything so we can live freely.”
