Province invests in equipment upgrades for community fire departments

“Volunteer firefighters provide an essential service to their communities and contribute to the well-being and security of all Islanders,” said Minister MacKinley. “These investments through the Island Community Fund will ensure firefighters can do their job safely and efficiently for years to come.”
The Province of Prince Edward Island, through the Island Community Fund, has partnered with six community organizations to invest in the projects:
• The Community of O’Leary received $5,250 for their fire department to purchase confined space rescue equipment and a power fan.
• The Community of Wellington Inc. received $7,800 to upgrade communication equipment and firefighting outfits and purchase ice rescue equipment.
• The Kinkora & Area Volunteer Fire Department received $12,500 to repair their Jaws of Life.
• The Community of Morell received $25,000 to update protective equipment including bunker gear, helmets, gloves, boots, breathing apparatuses and an imaging camera.
• The Community of North Rustico received $21,500 to purchase breathing apparatuses.
• The North River Rural Community Fire Company received $25,000 to purchase new bunker gear, air packs, air masks, air bottles, a Fcontainment station, and other rescue equipment
Since the Island Community Fund was established in 2008, over $2 million has been provided to community fire departments across Prince Edward Island to improve their facilities and safety equipment.
“It’s important for fire departments to be able to upgrade their equipment to meet the needs of the community and to keep up with technology,” said Kirby Wakelin, Fire Chief of the North River Fire Department. “It’s great to be able to work with Minister MacKinley and his team to make these upgrades possible.”
“Through the Island Community Fund, the Province of Prince Edward Island has been able to make significant investments in fire and safety from Souris to Tignish,” said Minister MacKinley. “The Province of Prince Edward Island is committed to working with our Island communities to improve community infrastructure, maintain strong communities and create a better quality of life for all Islanders.”
