Statement from Premier Robert Ghiz on tragedy in Moncton

Premier's Office

Premier Robert Ghiz issued the following statement today on the emergency events unfolding in Moncton, New Brunswick:

“On behalf of the government and people of Prince Edward Island, I want to extend our deep sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of the three RCMP officers who were fatally shot last night in Moncton. As a sign of respect and condolence, I have asked that flags at Government of Prince Edward Island properties are lowered to half-mast.

“The people of our neighbouring city of Moncton are facing another day of uncertainty and fear, and my thoughts and prayers are with them. Police and first responders are trained to handle emergency situations with professionalism, and I want to remind Islanders to respect the directions issued by the RCMP and avoid sharing unsubstantiated information.

“I am proud of the Prince Edward Island police officers from RCMP “L” Division, Charlottetown and Summerside Police Departments, who are supporting Codiac RCMP in Moncton and I continue to pray for their safety.”
