Statement from Premier Robert Ghiz on McCain

Premier's Office

“McCain has always been a strong employer for the area and an important community partner. The closing of the plant is regrettable news for the Province, employees and the Borden-Carleton community.

“I am pleased that McCain is providing support to their affected employees through severance, early retirement and retraining options. In addition, Skills PEI staff will be available for employees, and information sessions will be held in the near future. If employees prefer to speak with someone earlier, they can contact Skills PEI toll-free at 1 877 491-4766.

“McCain is also providing $2 million in transition funding to identify potential economic development initiatives. In the coming weeks and months an action plan will be developed, however our first priority is with the plant employees.

“In closing, we fully recognize the importance and significance of the potato industry on the Island and look forward to discussing the success of its future with industry leaders.”
