Nominations for the awards come from industry organizations, fellow industry members and the general public. The 2014 recipients are Brenda Campbell and Bob Fortune.

“Prince Edward Island’s shellfish industry has earned a reputation for high quality products due in large part to the work of people like Brenda Campbell and Bob Fortune,” said Minister MacKinley. “On behalf of the industry and the province, I want to extend congratulations to both on their outstanding contribution and wish them well in their continued work.”

Brenda Campbell is the first female president of the Prince Edward Island Shellfish Association. Brenda is also a Director of the Shellfish Festival and represents Island fishers on multiple working groups and committees and takes a strong voice to those tables advocating on their behalf.

Bob Fortune is a pioneer in the mussel industry. Bob acquired his first mussel lease in Murray River in 1986 and, with his brother Brian, formed the mussel farming and processing companies, Atlantic Aqua Farms Inc. and B and B Mussel Farms. He has also worked closely with government to develop high pressure water technology to rid mussel lines of invasive tunicates.

“The Island shellfish industry employs more than 3,000 Islanders in rural communities across the province and contributes more than $80 million to the provincial economy,” said Minister MacKinley. “The Province of Prince Edward Island will continue to support the industry and help grow and develop the demand for Island shellfish around the world.”
