Book talk and donation highlights resilience of abuse survivors

Tourism and Culture

The Provincial Child Sexual Abuse Advisory Committee recently donated copies of Anne Ream’s book, Lived Through This: Listening to the Stories of Sexual Violence Survivors, to public libraries across Prince Edward Island, says Valerie E. Docherty, Minister of Community Services and Seniors.

“Sexual violence is not an easy topic to discuss, however, this book demonstrates the courage and resilience of survivors of sexual abuse from all over the world, including some from Prince Edward Island,” said Minister Docherty. “The stories in her book reveal the candid experiences of individuals whose lives have been affected but not defined by their experiences.”

The Provincial Child Sexual Abuse Advisory Committee has donated 22 copies of Ms. Ream’s book to the provincial library system. This donation will also coincide with a book talk being hosted by the Confederation Centre Public Library on October 30 at 7 p.m. The event is free and provides an opportunity to “meet” the author via SKYPE and to promote the availability of this important book Island-wide.

“The Public Library Service is very pleased to partner with the Advisory Committee on this important initiative,” said Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson. “By adding this book to our collection we give Islanders an opportunity to hear the voices of individuals who’ve lived through sexual violence, and at the same time build awareness about an issue that affects so many.”

Anne Ream is also founder of The Voices and Faces Project, an award-winning new-media documentary initiative created to bring the stories of survivors of sexual violence and trafficking to the attention of the public.

Ms. Ream’s book, Lived Through This: Listening to the Stories of Sexual Violence Survivors, is now available in all English libraries across the Island. An electronic version of the book is also available online at: library.pe.ca/digitalmedia.
