Lori Sheidow has been selected as this year’s winner of the Nora Bateson Award for Excellence in Library Service in recognition of her contributions to the day-to-day operations of Public Libraries on the Island, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson.

“In her capacity as Technical and Support Services Supervisor, Ms. Sheidow oversees the ordering, cataloguing and processing of library materials at headquarters in Morell,” said Minister Henderson. “She has had a long and distinguished career with the Library Service and she provides many of the essential behind-the-scenes services that library users depend on. She is a highly respected employee and a true team player. I offer my sincere congratulations and heartfelt thanks for all she does to improve the services we offer at our Public Libraries.”

Ms. Sheidow began her career with the Public Library Service in the late 80s as a summer student. From there she joined the technical services team and went on to make vital contributions to the Service’s ordering and cataloguing system that have made it one of the best in the country.

This award was created in honour of the Island’s first librarian, Nora Bateson. Ms. Bateson travelled throughout the province promoting the development of community libraries beginning in 1933. She helped open many library branches on Prince Edward Island in the 1930s. Today there are 26 public libraries serving communities on Prince Edward Island.

The award recognizes a current staff member who exemplifies the initiative and commitment to excellence shown by Nora Bateson.
