“Sport and recreation are important parts of physical and mental health and it is important that Islanders in rural communities have access to these opportunities close to home,” said Minister MacKinley. “Our Government will continue to support community organizations in their work to create a better quality of life for all Islanders.”
The Province of Prince Edward Island, through the Island Community Fund, is investing over $61,600 in four projects. The department partnered with four community organizations to fund the projects.
• West Prince Tired Iron Club 2008 Inc. received $22,294 for renovations to the club’s activity centre and workshop. The club will be partnering with the local 4-H club to help them learn about antique equipment and the history of the farming industry;
• O’Leary & Area Development Corporation received $20,000 for the purchase and installation of accessible playground equipment at the Bloomfield Elementary School;
• Jacques Cartier Memorial Arena Inc. received $12,109 to upgrade the arena to replace the oil tank, rubber flooring and bring the plant room up to safety standards; and
• O’Leary & Area Development Corporation received $7,206 for the purchase and installation of accessible playground equipment at O’Leary Elementary School.
The four projects have a combined total value of almost $170,000.
“The West Prince Tired Iron Club would like to thank the department for funding this worthwhile project,” states Claude Dorgan, Chair. “This project brings together the youth and seniors of our community by showcasing antique machinery of the past and preserving it for the future.”
“The Island Community Fund helps build stronger rural communities by enhancing economic opportunities, supporting recreational opportunities, increasing public safety and strengthening community spirit,” said Minister MacKinley. “The Province of Prince Edward Island will continue to invest in projects that support our Island communities from tip to tip.”
Since 2009, the Island Community Fund has invested nearly $20 million to support more than 400 projects across the province, with a total project value of $67 million.
