The Island Community Fund is investing in two projects in Malpeque that will result in upgrades to community facilities, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“The provincial government recognizes the important place that facilities occupy in rural communities,” said Mr. MacKinley. “Investing in those facilities brings significant benefits to the people of those communities and strengthens community pride.”

The Malpeque Women’s Institute has received approval to provide wheelchair accessible washrooms at the community centre. The total cost of the project is $14,300, with $10,725 coming from the Island Community Fund. The Malpeque Historical Society will receive $7,500 to complete renovations to the Keir Memorial Museum as part of a total investment of $10,000. The projects are nearing completion.

“The Island Community Fund has been a great program for the Malpeque Women’s Institute,” said chair Joyce Bryenton. “The fund has enabled our group to better serve the people using the community centre which in turn has helped to keep the facility open. We would like to thank the Province of Prince Edward Island for providing funding to update our centre.”

The Malpeque Women’s Institute operates an active community centre that hosts many events, including summer ceilidhs, concerts, receptions and community meetings. The Keir Memorial Museum offers various programs such as local genealogical information sessions and presentations on local historical and cultural subjects.

“These upgrades will benefit both local residents and visitors to this area of the province,” said Mr. Mackinley. “Through investments of this kind, the Island Community Fund is helping to ensure that rural islanders build stronger communities and more active community engagement.”

Since 2009, the Island Community Fund has invested close to $20 million to support more than 400 projects in rural Prince Edward Island, with a total project value of $67 million.
