January 27th is Family Literacy Day in Prince Edward Island, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac.

“Parents who focus on building early literacy skills are giving their children a strong foundation for formal instruction,” says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac. “Families help children develop literacy skills when they spend time talking, singing, counting, reading and writing together.”

Family Literacy Day is a national celebration that encourages families to participate in literacy activities together. Digital Literacy is the theme of this year’s Family Literacy Day in Prince Edward Island.

Families can take part in digital literacy activities at PEI Literacy Alliance’s Family Literacy Day celebration. The event will include free digital literacy workshops, interactive booths and celebrity readers.

“Investing in literacy, including digital literacy, gives children and families an opportunity to learn and develop their literacy skills,” said Amanda Beazley, program coordinator with the PEI Literacy Alliance. “This event will get families excited about developing their digital literacy skills and learn about age appropriate use of technology and how to protect children online.”
