Celebrating our teachers and school staff

Education and Early Childhood Development

During National Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week, we reflect on the important contributions made by teachers and school staff who support our students throughout the school year, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac.

“During the week of February 8-14th, we recognize teachers and staff who make a difference in the lives of our students, “said Minister McIsaac. “Together, these hardworking individuals are a key element in helping our children thrive, achieve and succeed.”

As part of the celebrations, Kate MacSwain and Barbie MacQuarrie were recognized with the PEI Home and School Federation’s Extra Mile Award. Another recipient will be announced next week. This award highlight the outstanding contributions of teachers or school staff who exemplify what it means to go above and beyond the call of duty in their professions.

Kate MacSwain, Behaviour Resource Specialist at Souris Regional School, has a caring and patient approach to challenging issues. Her support to parents and advocacy for children has resulted in positive outcomes for her students.

Barbie MacQuarrie is an Administrative Assistant at Spring Park School. She is pivotal at making the school day flow effectively and ensuring the school is a safe and caring place to study. Students say that she knows all their names and loves each one of them.

In addition, Mr. Parker Grimmer has been recognized as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals for 2015. Mr. Grimmer has shown a commitment to evidence-based, data-driven instructional strategies. He has successfully cultivated a culture of assessment at Queen Charlotte Intermediate School.

“Teachers and staff go the ‘extra mile’ on a regular basis for P.E.I. students,” comments Peter Rukavina, President P.E.I. Home and School Federation. “During the week of February 8-14, parents are encouraged to take a moment to thank that special school staff person in your child’s life.”
