The provincial public service recognized some of its own for promoting a diverse workplace, Premier Wade MacLauchlan says.

“Islanders come from many backgrounds, representing different generations, languages, ethnicities, cultures, and other identities,” the premier said. “In the public service, we value a workplace that reflects our diverse Island population and honor those who make an extra effort to make things better for everyone.”

Each year during Public Service Week, the Premier’s Diversity Leadership Award recognizes employees who show leadership in diversity by encouraging a welcoming and inclusive public service. The award was presented today to Rosemary Fleming from Colonel Gray High School, and to the Child and Family Services division of the Department of Family and Human Services.

Fleming, the vice principal at Colonel Gray, plays a key role in welcoming students coming from different countries. Her nomination cites the countless hours she spends researching and understanding different cultures and sharing that experience with the school community, as well as the close working relationships she maintains with immigrant-serving agencies and volunteer groups.

The Child and Family Services division of the Department of Family and Human Services developed Aboriginal Cultural Connections, a Child Protection Guide. In creating this impressive resource guide, the department demonstrated diversity leadership by working with the Island’s First Nations and Aboriginal Organizations.

“This year’s recipients recognize the importance of diversity and the value of encouraging understanding,” MacLauchlan said. “They – and all of our nominees – recognize that our workforce and our province are stronger when we celebrate diversity.”
