"Submissions from visits to PEI or from occasions important to the Royal Family would also be very welcome to help us celebrate a milestone with a special commemorative event for the Queen in early September," says His Honour, Lieutenant Governor Frank Lewis.

The upcoming day in September marks an extraordinary milestone. The 89 year old Queen will break the record, held for more than a century by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, and become the longest reigning monarch in British history as well as the longest reigning female monarch in world history. Queen Victoria's reign lasted 63 years.

Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II when she was 25 on the death of her father King George VI, who died in the early hours of February 6, 1952.

The Queen has become accustomed to countless milestones during her decades on the throne. In December 2007, she became the longest-living British monarch, overtaking Victoria who died when she was 81, and in May 2011, she became the second-longest reigning monarch in British history, when she overtook George III.

Queen Elizabeth II and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh last visited Prince Edward Island in 1973 to celebrate the centennial of the Island province's entry into Confederation.
