Premier congratulates recipient of Council of the Federation Literacy Award

Wilfred Augustine of Scotchfort is Prince Edward Island’s recipient of the 2015 Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

Premier Wade MacLauchlan presented the award to Mr. Augustine at the Rotary Club of Charlottetown meeting on Monday to mark International Literacy Week.

Years after leaving school prior to graduation, Mr. Augustine decided to attend the program offered by Holland College in his community where he successfully earned his Grade 12 diploma. He is now a student in the Correctional Officer Program at the Atlantic Policy Academy at Holland College.

“Wilfred is to be congratulated for his determination and commitment to upgrading his literacy skills,” said the Premier. “Through hard work, he has discovered a lifelong love of learning and a new career path.”

The Council of the Federation, which consists of Canada’s premiers, established the award to raise awareness of the importance of literacy and to recognize individuals and organizations in each province.

The Government of Prince Edward Island works with community partners to assist Islanders obtain literacy and essential skills. More information on adult learning can be found at www.gov.pe.ca.
