Statement by Premier MacLauchlan regarding the Fort McMurray fire

Premier's Office

Today I join all Islanders in expressing support to our extended family, the residents of Fort McMurray, during the catastrophe that continues to unfold.

Mr. Speaker, Islanders and residents of Fort McMurray are members of a common community; we are all personally affected by this catastrophe.

Over the last 24 hours we have seen and heard from Islanders reaching out to ensure their friends and families are safe, hearing of the harrowing evacuations, and of the sense of loss as our loved ones flee their homes. We share their sense of disbelief and concern as events continue. Although these events are taking place in Alberta, the effects are being felt in every community on Prince Edward Island.

These families are in our thoughts and prayers, as are all residents of Fort McMurray. I know Islanders are mindful of this and will continue to reach out to offer support to those in Fort McMurray and to the family members here on Prince Edward Island.

I have reached out to Premier Notley to offer our support and we are prepared to assist to in any way that we can. Our Emergency Measures Organization is also prepared to assist and has reached out as part of a national network of EMOs. At this time, Alberta is focusing on controlling the fire but has indicated officials will be reaching out to jurisdictions for help when required.

Prince Edward Island is a caring, generous province. My office has already received calls from Islanders wanting to know how they can help, from donations of Air Miles to financial contributions. I encourage Islanders wanting to offer assistance to contact the local Red Cross office. Prince Edward Island Liquor Control Commission stores will also be collecting donations for the Red Cross.

May 4 is International Firefighers’ Day. Today we give particular thanks to the firefighters in Fort McMurray today for dedicating their lives to protecting people and property.

We will continue to hold Fort McMurray in our thoughts and will be prepared to assist during what will be a long recovery.

**Islanders who want to help with Fort McMurray relief efforts can go to, call 1-800-418-1111 or donate at any PEI liquor store**
