Community and Cultural Affairs Minister Elmer MacFadyen expressed his pleasure with the high quality of student work which is being showcased at the National fair. “Participants in the National Heritage Fair have earned this opportunity to represent Prince Edward Island through hard work and creativity,” he said. “Each of these students has demonstrated his or her appreciation and understanding of the unique and important history of Prince Edward Island and of Canada.”

The National Heritage Fair is an annual event which brings together students from across Canada to share their experience and culture. The fair is the culmination of a series of fairs at the school and provincial levels in all provinces and territories.

Following judging at the Provincial Heritage Fair, and upon recommendation of school principals and with the consent of parents/guardians, the following 15 students were selected to attend the National Heritage Fair in Halifax this week:

• Justin Coffin, Morell Regional High, Project title: In the fiddle case

• Rebecca Dawson, Englewood School, Project title: PEI Railway

• Alex Fitzpatrick, Souris Consolidated, Project title: Shipbuilding in the Souris area

• Janae Gallant, Elm Street Elementary, Project title: Oak Island

• Zachary Grigg, Hernewood Intermediate, Project title: The history of the telephone

• Kevin Hodgkins, Amherst Cove Consolidated, Project title: The Bluenose

• Megan Koughan, Donagh Regional, Project title: The devil’s box

• Kristen Lawless, Somerset School, Project title: Yankee Gale

• Rebecca Lewis, Ecole Francois Buote, Project title: Les chinois canadiens/Chinese Canadians

• Josh MacDougall, Ellerslie Elementary, Project title: Weatherlore

• Nathan Marcoux, Ecole Francois Buote, Project title: Le sirop d’erable/Maple syrup

Nicholas Clements, a student at Westisle Composite High School, has joined the Prince Edward Island delegation as an alumni student. An alumni student is one who has previously attended a National Heritage Fair and acts as a junior counsellor to delegates as well as a contributor to Heritage Press, the National Fair e-zine found at www.histori.ca.

The Island students are travelling with Head of Delegation Corinne Chappell (Colonel Gray High School) and chaperones: Roberta Clark (Department of Education), Darwin Woods (Eliot River Elementary) and Claude Brisson (Bloomfield Elementary).

“I would like to wish the Island delegation well,” Minister MacFadyen added. “As ambassadors of Prince Edward Island, they will proudly share our heritage.”
