Premier Binns advised that the Council of the Federation Literacy Award recognizes the courage and determination of the many adult learners who return to school later in life. “We have heard from many adult Islanders that returning to school is a big step but it can be the best decision a person can ever make. Adult learners are excellent role models and we encourage Islanders to celebrate their success by nominating a deserving adult learner for the award this year.”

The award was presented in PEI for the first time in 2005 to Charlottetown business person Dianne C. Smith. After her children were grown, Ms. Smith returned to school, completed her GED exams and established a successful Island business.

The award was presented in 2006 to Anne Morrison, an outstanding school teacher and adult educator from Morell. Through her passion for people and learning, Ms. Morrison helped many adult Islanders improve their literacy skills, their quality of life and the lives of their families.
