Human Rights Commission Announces Award

Office of the Attorney General

The Prince Edward Island Human Rights Commission is pleased to announce the first annual Award for the Advancement of Human Rights on PEI.

The Commission has created this award in order to recognize individuals, groups or organizations that have made significant contributions toward the advancement of human rights on Prince Edward Island.

The selection of the recipient of the Award will be based on exceptional achievement on a volunteer basis to promote human rights and equality in Prince Edward Island as defined in the Prince Edward Island Human Rights Act.

The Act prohibits discrimination in such areas as employment, accommodation and public services based on a number of grounds including: age, colour, creed, ethnic or national origin, family status, marital status, physical or intellectual disability, political belief, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or source of income.

For more information on grounds for discrimination please visit our website, peihumanrights.com. Nomination forms are available on the website and at Access PEI sites throughout the Province.

The closing date for nominations is October 15, 2008, with the presentation of the award taking place during our celebration of International Human Rights Day, December 10, 2008.

Anyone requiring additional information, should contact Lorraine Buell at 902-368-4180.
