Community Care Facility Delivery Service Expanding
Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour
The delivery service supports literacy for Island seniors and the life long love of reading, said Minister Bertram. We are so pleased to work with the Community Care Facilities and to expand this program so more seniors have access to large print materials. I am confident that this program will continue to expand and additional facilities will utilize the service.
The service began as a pilot project of four community care facilities in Kings County and Queens County. The library service set aside funds to purchase a new large print collection of books exclusively for the initiative. With the success of the service at the initial four locations, the delivery service has been expanded to include four additional facilities in Prince County. This library outreach service has proven extremely popular with residents and expansion to include additional homes is expected. Community Care Facilities interested in participating in the program are encouraged to contact the Public Library Service at (902) 961-7320.
The large print collection currently holds more than 400 books with plans for additional materials. Operating out of Library Headquarters in Morell, this new service offers a delivery of books to each facility every six weeks. Library staff work with community care facility staff to select books to meet the reading interests of residents. The books are distributed and enjoyed by clients at each home during the month.

Perrins Marina Villa in Montague
Riverview Manor in Montague
Andrews of Stratford
MacEwan Mews in Kensington
Andrews of Summerside
Park Hill Place in Summerside
Seniors Home Care Cooperative in Tignish.
For many of these facilities, the convenience and scope of this service is an essential part of their activities and wellness programs. For those compromised in being able to read on their own, staff at some facilities organize and participate in group readings of short stories so that all residents can share in the value provided by this program.
