“Kellie Saarloos joined us by operating the CAP site at Mojo’s Pizza in 2005 and has consistently worked since then to make sure computer and Internet access was available in her community. She is known for her enthusiasm and committed to making sure her customers are happy,” Minister Roach said. “People like Kellie have helped to open up the world of technology to all Islanders.”

Saarloos has worked as Coordinator of the Hunter River/Breadalbane CAP Site since 2007. The award is given in recognition of outstanding dedication to provide public access service to Island communities.

“This award honours those people who carry on the legacy of Stephen Dennis by making Internet available in the community,” said the minister.

The Community Access Program is a partnership between federal and provincial government that provides Islanders with affordable access to the Internet in public locations like schools, libraries and community centres. The sites are designed to be “on-ramps” for online learning and literacy, as well as to foster community-based infrastructure and Canadian e-commerce.

Stephen Dennis was the founder of the Tremploy Inc. CAP site in 1998 and was instrumental in developing the state-of-the-art site which caters to clients of the centre, as well as the general public. Tremploy is recognized for its contributions to programming for persons with intellectual disabilities. Stephen was a very active proponent of the program and IT in general. He continued to communicate with clients of Tremploy by sending daily inspirational messages via email right up until his untimely passing. The Tremploy CAP Site has been re-named the Stephen Dennis Centre in honour of his contributions to Information Technology, his community and to the hundreds of clients he touched over the years.
